Relating to Technology like a Pilot

Published on April 21, 2011 by Lillian Coury

When you DARE to FLY, the E stands for learning to deal with “Everything Else in your Environment” – that includes time, money, technology, government, the economy, rules and regulations, laws, climate and weather…I could go on and on, but you get the picture!

You would have to deal with an ever-changing environment even if you weren’t riding a winged horse like Pegasus, who carried his rider to victory in battle with the Gods. You could just be flying an airplane and you still have a constantly shifting environment.

Stop and think about an airplane on autopilot.  How much of the time do you think that plane is actually on course?  The fact is, that airplane is only on course about 10% of the time, as its constantly correcting its course, having to compensate for air currents, barometric changes, etc.  So really, that airplane on autopilot is constantly zig-zagging, constantly assessing and correcting, then repeating the process over and over! But the technology of the autopilot system is working, and the system is doing the assessment and resetting the controls to correct the course.

All’s well when the systems are working correctly…but when they don’t, all hell breaks loose!  We’ve all experienced that:  the cell phone dies, the computer gets a virus, the battery dies in the car, the accounting program outputs garbage because garbage was input!  Or the reports that are delivered every week, never get reviewed and analyzed finally pile up into a catastrophe.

We live in a world of systems and technology…and they’re both a blessing and a curse.  I believe that mastering that paradox, like the pilot mastering the plane’s autopilot, is one of the greatest challenges of our time. It’s such an important topic that my special guest for the Workstyle Bootcamp is tech expert, Carol Hagen who is going to be teaching strategies for Email Management. Are your systems working to help you stay on course?  Are you actually using the systems you have?  Do they need to be updated?  Do they need to be high tech, or does your system need to be simplified for the human (you?) who needs to find a way to be consistent in doing some task, or reviewing some report…is it a technology challenge or behavioral practice that needs to be better utilized?  What relationships help you in mastering your various systems and array of technologies?

We each have different levels of embracing and accepting and utilizing aspects of our changing technological world, from email, to social media, to gadgets and sophisticated software systems…and on and on. Accept where you are at with technology and strive to be that pilot working in tandem with a system designed to help you fly high and reach your destination.
