HOW to reach for your goals – and live to tell the story!

We all love to hear stories of success, of a stellar achievement despite the odds, or the realization of a dream due to dedication and ingenuity.  Do you have a story like that?

Stories help us see possibilities for ourselves, and that’s the power of stories - they inspire us, allowing us to see aspects of ourselves in another’s story, and somehow that brings our own dreams a little closer.

What makes some people’s dreams turn into reality?  How might you turn your dream into your story of success and achievement?

I’ve been listening to stories of success and self-actualization for many years in my business, and here are the basic steps that ensure you realize of your own meaningful goals:

  • Know what you want.  This is so basic, so fundamental, and yet it’s the most unanswered question (except in restaurants!).  Whatever your dream, goal or desired outcome, get really specific about the quality, quantity and experience you want – write it down, and get help and support if you need it. There is a big difference between deciding you want to be “rich” and deciding you want to own a 5 bedroom home in Hawaii. No kidding – you won’t get very far if you don’t know where exactly you want to end up.
  • Follow your “Path of Inquiry”.  This is what I call the inquisitive attitude that is always seeking more information, exploring possibilities, finding new solutions, and identifying the people that might help you. It means following a path that you’re discovering as you go, one step at a time.

For example, a client of mine wanted to play a more prominent part in her company’s client outreach, despite her perceived “youthful appearance,” which she felt was holding her back.  Her “path of inquiry” was to be prepared to ask questions and observe developments in every conversation, every networking event, and every meeting with her bosses and her colleagues. She aimed to be alert in every situation that might contribute to an opportunity to advance her purpose.

By following this “path of inquiry,” she discovered she needed to monitor her negative thoughts, upgrade her wardrobe, follow up on conversations with creative suggestions, and participate in offering possible solutions.  The result:  she was invited to emcee the annual client appreciation celebration. She was front and center having secured the confidence of her bosses and colleagues, but more importantly, she renewed confidence within herself!

  • Build your arsenal and network.  Gather the facts and figures.  I’m all for making decisions with your heart, but when you can back up inspiration with logic and the statistics and factual information that turns possibility into probability; you’re on your way!  Create your network of support.  I’m talking about an Advisory Board, a Master Mind group, a coach, or all of them!  And I don’t mean the cheerleaders of your life…I mean the people that will tell you the hard and cold truth when you need to hear it - the people that will hold you accountable for doing what you say you’re going to do. I’m talking about the staunch supporters who know you can do what you need to do to get what you want, and will do everything in their power to get you there.  They may cheerlead you, but they’ll be more dedicated to you and your success than the pure cheerleader type of supporters.  Find the right people, then risk receiving the greatest gift imaginable.
  • Take next right action.  Your next action step is almost always indicated when you are clear on what you want, have followed your “path of inquiry” and listened to the support of wise advisors.  Now take a deep breath, and take the next right action.  There will always be another “next right action,” so don’t waste time when the time is right.
  • Keep your eyes and ears open.  As you make progress, stay open and receptive to new information and opportunities that may correct or change your course.  Our world is so complex, and there are so many outside forces that affect us, that staying abreast of them and how they may affect you, your business and your health is critical to staying the course and ultimate success.
  • Celebrate each successful achievement.  This is so important!  It’s like being on a long, arduous hike…reaching the pinnacle of the peak is the ultimate goal, but there are so many breathtaking views along the ascent.  Be sure to take those moments to catch your breath, take in the new view, assess your progress, and recalibrate your perspective.  The celebration makes the journey so much sweeter, but be sure to include those people in your network of support – they deserve to share in some of the glory!

These are the ingredients of your success story – now live it so you can tell it to inspire others!

We’re always telling little stories about what happened during our day, the touching stories of relationships, disappointments, heartwarming scenarios…but I’m talking about the stories that change our lives, our work, and our world.  Live your story consciously and please include me when you share it!
